If someone came to Hawaii and went "oooh look, natives!" it would be the same kind of awkward feeling. I think you're making every effort not to be "that guy", which is commendable. When I was in South America, the Indians believed you were stealing their soul by taking their picture. Now whenever I have traveled, I have just considered it an invasion of a person's privacy.
