Regarding your human zoo comment: I think because you grew up in an indigenous culture (or at least as indigenous as Hawaii gets), you tend to have a natural sensitivity to other people and other cultures. If someone came to Hawaii and went "oooh look, natives!" it would be the same kind of awkward feeling. I think you're making every effort not to be "that guy", which is commendable.

Dear Doug,

Enjoyed your report thru 12-14. Glad you got to meet Maureen--I hope to read what she is writing about her Dad, Piet, in and after WW II. It's 5 below zero F here. We have about 5 inches of snow on the ground, but have had winter weather only about 2 1/2 weeks. We wish you a very merry Christmas and a super new year. Rob hopes you settle down in MN in the next 5 years. I'd recommend Hawaii or NZ. Love, Unk

Hi Doug,
I quite agree with your thinking about not taking pictures of the locals. When I was in South America, the Indians believed you were stealing their soul by taking their picture. Now whenever I have traveled, I have just considered it an invasion of a person's privacy. I have so enjoyed your photos and look forward to your book.
